2005 Raveneau Chablis Premier Cru "Montée de Tonnerre" France

Raveneau Chablis Premier Cru "Montée de Tonnerre"

Domaine Raveneau is surely one the flagship wineries of the Chablis appellation, producing some of the most pure and most representative Chablis wines every year. Now run by the two brothers, Jean-Marie and Bernard Raveneau, the Domaine continues to set the example and inspire numerous other wineries in the area and the rest of the world. If only the price could be lower....anyhow.... "Montée de Tonnerre" is one of the most consistent wines from this Domaine and the 2005 has surely a lot to offer in terms of depth and structure.

The 2005 Raveneau Chablis Montée de Tonnerre is a rich wine, as far as Chablis is concern. Although this wine was aged in old large oak vat, the oak flavors appeared quite obvious a couple of years ago and could have been more integrated. Moreover, due to the ripe 2005 vintage, it seems that the structure & richness of this wine were more accentuated. Yet a couple of year later, nowadays, the oak seems better integrated and the natural acidity and mineral brought by the kimmeridgian soils of Chablis are now beautifully balancing all the components of this wine gem. Pale golden color, this wine exposes aromas of white and yellow fruit, honey, and stone minerality on the nose with light vanillan oak hints. The palate is quite rich and intense with golden apple and yellow fruit flavors combined with great, refreshing acidity. The finish is quite long and vibrant, despite the overall fatness of the wine.

Overall, and there again due to the ripe 2005 vintage, it is definitely not a classic and doesn’t resemble its predecessor, the 2004 vintage which was more Chablis like (in many ways). However, the 2005 vintage Montée de Tonnerre remains a great example of what Domaine Raveneau can craft, even in warmer vintage.

Enjoy!
