This "OVNI" (Objet Vineux Non Identifié) is a "UNICORN" in the world of Burgundy Grand Cru. 

One can only feel privileged to be in the presence of such a rare bottle.

One of the smallest Domaines in Burgundy, Domaine Bizot is highly sought-after by connoisseurs and collectors. It spans only 3.5 hectares, with 2.5 hectares of vines planted in the village of Vosne-Romanée and 1 hectare located further north around Marsannay. Due to its size and rarity, it is often considered a unicorn among wine enthusiasts.

The Domaine has achieved "cult" status due to its tiny production. All its appellations combined rarely exceed 10,000 bottles in a regular vintage. Lesser vintages, such as 2010 and 2012, saw the total production fall to only 5,000 bottles.

Jean-Yves Bizot produces a very limited amount of his Echezeaux, only five barrels or less than 1500 bottles, making it a true unicorn and incredibly difficult to access.

It is his only “Grand Cru". His other wines are made from other appellations, such as Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru and Village, Marsannay, Bourgogne Blanc, and Rouge.

Since his first vintage in 1995, he has adopted a minimalist approach to winemaking for all his wines. This includes organic vineyard management methods, whole cluster vinification, fermenting in wooden vats at low temperatures, using little or no sulfur during vinification and “élevage,” and aging in 100% new oak barrels.

Meticulously hand-bottled, barrel by barrel, without filtration, Bizot's wines require long aging to reach their full potential and reward those with the patience to wait for them. 

Finding a bottle of Bizot's Echezeaux is already a quest in itself. And as if this was not hard enough, all this goodness, charm, subtlety, elegance, and complexity come at a higher price than its DRC counterpart.

I often refer to myself as one of the luckiest sommeliers in the world, and getting my hands on one of these most coveted bottles proves it once again. 

However, this bottle was a gift from a guest to the dinner host, and they decided not to open it. Therefore, I could not taste it. Nevertheless, I hope to get a chance to taste it someday.

The good thing about wine is that there is always something new to discover, taste, and learn about.

This is an expensive "Bourgogne Aligoté" from a producer I had never heard of before (yes, that happens!). So, I researched it, and this is what I have found.

Catharina Sadde, one of Burgundy's rising stars, crafted this wine.

Before settling in Burgundy, Catharina studied at Geisenheim, one of Germany's most renowned wine schools. She started her career as a chef in several Michelin-starred restaurants in Germany before embarking on her wine adventure.

In France, she completed her training and gained skills and experience with some of the most illustrious producers of Burgundy, including Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Comte Armand, Cecile Tremblay, Marquis d’Angerville... (now that's impressive).

After completing her training, this talented winemaker, with an inspiring résumé, created "Les Horées" in 2018, accompanied by her husband, Guilhem. "Les Horées" refers to the Greek celebrations that honor the seasons.

Catharina's first vintage 2019 put her on the radar of burgundy lovers. The tiny Domaine has 1.3 ha of vineyards in Pommard, Volnay, and Beaune, planted with Chardonnay, Aligoté, Pinot Noir, and Gamay. She also makes some cuvées from purchased grapes.

Following Biodynamic principles, everything in the vineyard is done by hand with great care, including horse plowing and no addition of sulfur. In the cellar, vinification without added sulfites, only natural yeasts in both barrels and stainless-steel tanks. Inclusion of the whole cluster for the Reds. A small amount of sulfur is added before bottling.

This "Bourgogne Aligoté - En Coulezain" is mainly crafted from 30 years old vines in Volnay (representing about 4 barrels) and a small amount of very old vines (about 100 years) in Pommard, owned by Catharina. Tiny production.

Winemaking involves 1/3 de-stemmed grapes and 2/3 whole clusters pressed in a basket press. Skin-contact for the de-stemmed grapes for 5 days in 50-liter crates, while the whole clusters are directly pressed. Fermentation initiated using indigenous yeast, and no sulphur added until after malolactic fermentation. Aged for six months in 350-liter old oak barrels.

Now you know as much as I do! I can't wait to see if it is worth the hype and the price (around 250-300 Euros)!

Real ou fake? Vraie ou fausse bouteille?

Mais d'où vient cet "OVNI"? (objet à valeur non identifiée 😜)

Une fois n'est pas coutume, je vais faire ce post en français, en espérant avoir une réponse de nos amis(ies) Bourguignons(nes) ou autres connaisseurs et amateurs(trices).

J'ai bien essayé de contacter Domaine Leflaive, mais ils sont en vacances jusqu'à la semaine prochaine.

J'ai trouvé cette bouteille en faisant un inventaire chez un particulier, et, personnellement, en 32 ans de carrière, je n'ai jamais vu de bouteilles du "Domaine Leflaive" et/ou "Domaine Leflaive & Associés" arborer un œuvre d'art ou peinture (ou quoi que ce soit d'autre) sur l'étiquette, qui plus est "non signée"...🤔🤔🤔

Même la contre-étiquette me paraît bizarre...De plus, Bâtard-Montrachet est normalement produit par le Domaine..🤔🤔🤔

Même la soi-disant "NFC" ("anti-counterfeiting label" ou "étiquette anti-contrefaçon" en français) demande de "scanner" la contre-étiquette, où il n'y a rien à scanner... là encore bizarre...🤔🤔🤔

J'ai même pris une photo du cul de la bouteille pour une identification plus précise.

Donc voilà, en tant qu'ancien Directeur Control Qualité, je suis curieux, et n'ayant ni la réponse, ni l'expérience d'un tel cas d'étiquette pour Domaine Leflaive & Associés et n'ayant rien trouvé non plus sur internet, je vous pose les questions suivantes:

Est-ce une vraie ou fausse bouteille?

Est-ce une contrefaçon ou une série particulière et limitée?

Pour quelle raison cette étiquette est-elle différente?

Si c'est une vraie étiquette, qui est l'artiste?

Et pourquoi il ou elle n'a pas signée son œuvre?

Aucune explication sur la contre-etiquette non plus, pourquoi?

Si la NFC est aussi vraie, pourquoi n'y a-t-il rien à scanner?

Et si c'est une fausse, faites le moi savoir aussi, car il faudra que j'informe son propriétaire, car c'est une bouteille qui vaut environ 1,400 Euros en moyenne, ce qui n'est pas rien.

J'ai enfin une réponse ! Obtenue le 4 septembre 2023, après avoir contacté le Domaine directement, j'ai eu confirmation que cette bouteille est une vraie bouteille.

Sans vraiment rentrer dans les détails, tout ce que je peux vous dire est qu’une petite parcelle de Bâtard-Montrachet appartenant à une personne fortunée est vinifiée par le Domaine Leflaive. D'où l'existence de ce « Bâtard-Montrachet » produit en petites quantités sous l'étiquette « Leflaive & Associés » et non pas « Domaine Leflaive ». Les œuvres sur l'étiquette, apparemment différentes chaque année, sont choisies par son propriétaire, et aucune explication ne m'a été donnée sur la raison du pourquoi celle-ci n'est pas signée ou ne mentionne pas le nom de son auteur/autrice. Ces bouteilles ne sont pas destinées à la vente, mais réservées à la consommation et au bon vouloir de son ou sa propriétaire, et donc normalement introuvables sur le marché. La raison de la présence de cette bouteille trouvée dans cette cave privée est qu'elle a été donnée en cadeau au propriétaire de cette cave, qui est surement un ami de la personne propriétaire de cette petite parcelle de Bâtard-Montrachet. Voila ! Vous en savez autant que moi. Et si vous avez la chance de croiser une telle bouteille, c’est une vraie et son propriétaire connait surement la personne fortunée qui lui a offert.
