I have heard it since my youth and said it before (phrased slightly differently, though). This quote came up a few days ago while discussing with my colleagues about high-quality wines and luxury products in general, like cars, clothes, watches, boats, planes, etc... 

...and it is true, it is very difficult to go back to drinking average wines once you have tasted some of the best wines some regions like Burgundy and Bordeaux can produce. 

This applies to all luxury products.
