Last night, we had a gathering with a few ex-colleagues and friends, as a remembering in the memory of our dear colleague, mentor and friend, Bernard de Laage de Meux, who passed away recently.

Ken Man brought this bottle of Alter Ego, the second wine of Château Palmer, where Bernard worked for 15 years (1999 - 2014). It was a way to have a bit of Bernard with us.





A bottle of Château Le Bon Pasteur would also have been a nice touch, as Bernard was the President of LBP until his passing. We will definitely find one for our next gathering.

As I always like to say: People who passed away only die if/when we stop thinking and talking about them like they were still there. Otherwise, they live on forever in our memories, thoughts, dreams, prayers and discussions.

So, that what we did, we revived our memories of Bernard, while eating some Chinese food and drinking a wine he was related to at some point in his life.





Despite being very young, this Alter Ego 2017 was really opened and approchable, generous, opulent and surprisingly good, for a vintage that is considered to be difficult mostly due to a severe frost in April, which considerably impacted some  producers in some areas. In short, a very  heterogeneous vintage resulting in average to good, bad and ugly wines.

That said, the growing conditions were not so bad after all. As per Jancice Robinson "rain end of June, dry summer, hot August, damp start to September, fine finish", allowing some producers to make some good wines. And, this Alter Ego is definitely a very good example of it.

Dark, inky color. Youthful nose boasting aromas of ripe dark fruits and berries, mingling with integrated oaky, toasted, smoky and earthy notes. Smooth and ample in the palate, without being heavy, generous and textured, focused and well crafted, with a good balance between the fruit, the acity and the tannins. Nicely expanding from the attack to the finish. What a very pleasant surprise! Loved it.

We did several toasts last night, yet, once again, with this post, I'd like to raise my glass to you Bernard. We miss you.

Enjoying a nice glass of red with Leonardo Degli'Innocenti, Operations Director at "Tuber" and "Cannubi" (*), while eating a delicious dish prepared by talented executive chef Keith Yam Ka-lok.

It was my first time at "Tuber". Very nice and cosy place, "Art Deco" style, comfortable and relaxed atmosphere, with a great wine list boasting a very interesting selection of Italian wines mingling with some from the rest of the world, at competitive prices.





I came that day to assist with the wine service for a private lunch. Once the lunch was over and the patrons were gone, pastry chef Tommaso Gaudino, Leonardo and myself sat down and enjoyed some pasta and wine (as we did not eat prior to the service). It was a brief, yet tasty, comforting and enjoyable experience.

Terre Nere Etna Rosso is one of my favourite red wines from Sicily. I used to buy and sell a lot of this wine during my New York years.






This Etna Rosso is a blend of 95% Nerello Mascalese, and 5% Nerello cappuccio, from 5 to 50-year-old vines, planted on volcanic soil, on the northern slope of Mount Etna, at an altitude between 600  and 900 meters. It is aged in large French oak barrels (10-30 hl) for 16 months, plus one month in steel tanks, then bottled unfiltered, with an average annual production of 11,000 cases.

This 2020 vintage visually presents an attractive clear, bright and youthful ruby colour. The nose is very incentive, boasting fresh aromas of red cherries and berries mingling with floral, earthy and mineral notes and smokey nuances. The palate is clean, precise and sharp, medium-bodied yet generously coating, offering plenty of subtle flavours, harmoniously balanced between the fruit, the zesty acidity and the present yet integrated tannins, providing this wine with great structure and texture, opulence and charm, with a good grip on the persistent finish. Love it.

Thank you for this enjoyable moment in your company Leonardo, it was really nice. Thanks to Chef Keith too.

It is not every day that I can open and taste some bottles from Armand Rousseau.

This particular producer is so in demand that it is difficult to find some bottles, and when you find some, they are so expensive, nowadays, that nobody drinks them anymore.

Instead, they use them as products of speculation, by putting them in their cellars, prior to reselling them a few years later via auction houses or private sales. 

Yet, on some rare occasions, like today, some of these bottles end up being served, rather than being stored. 






The first bottle was delicate, silky and elegant, not to say light, faded and thin. The nose timidly offered aromas of red, almost slightly underriped cherry and griottes, herbs, minerals and earthy notes. The palate was light bodied, a bit thin in my opinion, delivering nice and gentle cherry fruit, backed up by a great acidity, but not really substantial, lacking of texture and structure. It was good and overall balanced and harmonious, but lacked the layers, complexity and wow factor somewhat expected at HKD 14,500 (€1800) a bottle. Good, not great. 

The 2nd bottle showed much better features and quality: more expressive on the nose and on the palate, it seemed fresher, more opulent, ample and generous, and had a more persistent finish. Ever the color seemed darker and younger than the previous bottle. Loved it . 

Which made me ponder and ask myself why? This is a great example of bottle variations which, once again, proved the importance of being aware of the provenance and storage conditions, as well as anthenticy and genuineness of the bottles. Both real? One fake? Or one that already traveled the world over many times in auctions? Who knows... All I can say is that the difference was obvious... yet, so many factors might come to play to explain this difference. Hard to say.

The Usual Trio: 

Champagne, Burgundy & Bordeaux 




Over the weekend, I served these 3 bottles and was (somewhat) pleasantly surprised despite my original fear of the vintages, 2010 being an awful vintage in Champagne, 2017 being an overall "ok-to-good" vintage but not great in Burgundy, and the same for 2014 in Bordeaux, which was definitely a lesser vintage.  


You may wonder why I titled this post "The usual Trio"? ... well, just because, over my 31 year's career as a Sommelier / Wine Buyer, this is the most usual trio of wines that I usually serve to most tables (of at least 4 people... or let's say it is my target), it does not always work that way, yet, it does more often than none: Champagne, Burgundy and Bordeaux. 


Champagne, as starting the meal with some bubbles, more especially after a day at work, not only lightens the atmosphere and brightens the mood, but also refreshes the mind and spirit, and makes it a good excuse for any festive events or occasions to celebrate. And, if at least 2 people out of 4 at the table drink Champagne, might as well go for the bottle (works with any wine).   

Burgundy, because I'm a traitor to my region of origin, Bordeaux, who drinks much more Burgundy than Bordeaux at the end of the day, more specifically white burgundy. And, also because I'm living in Hong Kong, where the temperatures are quite warm, 10 months out of 12, and therefore it is easier for me to drink lighter Pinot Noir-based wines rather than Bordeaux, which are usually fuller or even heavier, and more tannic too.  

Bordeaux, because it is my native region and I love Bordeaux wines, which I have strongly promoted, bought, sold, tasted, served and drank over the last 31 years working in the wine industry. And, no matter what you can think, Bordeaux is quintessential to most restaurants and wine stores, a staple to wine culture, and the basic of wine education. In short, no matter what wine path you'll take, you'll always come back to Bordeaux wines, at some point or another.        








Dom Perignon Champagne 


A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away... I was a big fan of Dom Perignon. 

Back then, Dom Perignon was only produced in the best vintages, which rarely occurred more than 4-5 times per decade. The Champagne was prestigious and luxurious, recognized and praised as such, and even better if you could get an "Oenothèque" (the late-disgorged prestige cuvée corresponding to a small quantity of Dom Perignon bottles put aside and aged for a longer period in the cellar, to reach their "Plenitude", usually about 12-15 years, compared to only 7 years for the regular Dom Perignon). 

Then, in the 80s, things changed and the climate started to change too, with more solar, warmer years than ever before, like 1982, 85 and 89, making it for ripper, fruiter and fatter, richer champagnes. Starting in the 1990s, more vintages started to be produced and more bottles too: 7 vintages in the 90s compared to 5 in the 80s, and 8 vintages in the 2000s, increasing from about 2 million bottles back then to a staggering 5 million bottles nowadays.  

And, that's how Dom Perignon became a commercial brand, downgrading from one of the Top and most exclusive Champagne luxury brands to a rather "mainstream" discotheque beverage, with glowing fluorescent "Luminous" labels, to revamp their image and attract both the millennials and the music industry, more specifically the RAP and Hip-Hop world (cognacs and champagnes being their two beverage of choice, often referred to in a lot of their songs), as well as to increase their sales and profit, by creating a new trend for younger generations (champagne usually being more associated with special occasions and older people). 

And, why not? At the end of the day, I'm not judging, just stating the facts. Yet, in my eyes, Dom Perignon has changed and not necessarily for the better, as, what it became is no longer what it used to be. And don't get me wrong, I'm a "progressist", so I'm not the type of person to say "it was better before!", no, on the contrary, I'm all about progress and evolution and finding solutions to make things better.    

Yet, in my opinion, to achieve its goal of revamping its image, reputation and product line, Dom Perignon gradually spreads itself too thin, by adding more labels, making it very confusing for its consumers. 

Let me explain. 

Around 2016, they stopped using the word "Oenothèque" to replace it with "Plenitude" (*), and, yet, to remain in the race of  the "Top champagnes", they created 2 new labels instead: 
  • "P2", replacing the old "Oenotheque" label for the champagnes reaching their plenitude after 12-15 years of cellaring, and,  
  • "P3", a brand new label for the champagnes reaching their plenitude after 30-40 years of cellaring 
 
(*) The concept came from Richard Geoffroy, former "Chef de Cave" at Dom Perignon, from 1990 to 2019, who said that DP reaches 3 peaks of "Plenitude" (stage of completeness or readiness): 
  • Dom Perignon (regular or first plenitude) after about 7 years of cellaring
  • Dom Perignon "P2" (Plenitude 2 or second plenitude) after about 12-15 years of cellaring
  • Dom Perignon "P3" (Plenitude 3 or third plenitude) after about 30-40 years of cellaring
  
The concept itself is great and makes a lot of sense as it provides the consumers with more choices of qualitative champagnes, at various price levels, within the Dom Perignon label. And, I can understand that brands have to evolve for the better and develop to adapt to the new trends and habits of their customers and satisfy the needs of the various generations by offering different products, but, what I'm trying to get at is that Dom Perignon went a bit too far and too commercial, in my opinion, from producing 

- 3 types of Champagnes, under the Dom Perignon Label 
  1. DP Brut, 
  2. DP Brut Rosé 
  3. DP "Oenothèque"
To

- 6 types of champagnes 
  1. DP Brut 
  2. DP Brut "Luminous" label
  3. DP Brut Rosé 
  4. DP Brut Rosé "Luminous" label
  5. DP "P2" 
  6. DP "P3"
Even 7. if you consider all the DP "Oenothèque" that still can be found on the market and in the reserve cellar of Dom Perignon... 

...hence the reason why I'm saying that they made it more confusing for consumers (IMO).  


However, I'm deviating from the main subject, yet, it was important for me to state the above, as I'm far from being the only one to think that way about Dom Perignon... 

...and I must say that I'm a bit disappointed as, back in 1997, I had the chance to visit the Abbaye de Hautvillers (where the monk "Dom Perignon" used to live, worked, and pioneered a few winemaking techniques and contributed to the development of sparkling wines by introducing, amongst other things, the closure with the cork and the way to fasten it to the bottle with hemp string, etc...), as well as staying one night at the "Château de Saran", the property of Moet & Chandon, where we had a great dinner with some old Dom Perignon champagnes, and also where Richard Geoffroy himself disgorged an old vintage for us (we were a group of Sommeliers from the UK). 

It was an amazing experience which truly remained one of my dearest memories of that visit to Moet & Chandon (and Dom Perignon) and this overall trip to Champagne. Yet, which now feels stained by what I can only consider and describe as a commercial and lucrative turn, which has somewhat tarnished the "Grand" image I had of Dom Perignon.  

Personally, and for all the reasons cited above, I now only buy Dom Perignon when requested by a customer or my boss, or if necessary for a specific event, and only the good vintages, even if there are more expensive, because, at the end of the day, there are so many other champagne producers and brands that are as good and often way much better for much less.   

But enough of my deliberation on the subject, let's go back to the tasting notes for Dom Perignon 2010:

To be frank, as stated in the introduction of this post, I feared for the quality and taste of some of these bottles due to their underperforming vintages. 

Thus, I thought this particular champagne would be bad, as, overall, 2010 is a bad vintage for Champagne, more especially for champagnes with a high percentage of Pinot Noir (and Pinot Meunier) which suffered from the drought during summertime, then the heavy rain and unwanted rot prior and during the harvests... (...hence the reason for my "rant" above. Why making Dom Perignon even in bad vintages now? while it was made only in very good vintages before? Hence my disappointment!) 

In the glass, it showed a pale yellow colour, with fine, persistent bubbles. The nose boasted enticing aromas of both yellow and green apple, as well as lemon and slight exotic yellow fruits, mingling with hints of floral, vegetal and mineral notes, complemented by bready, toasted nuances. The palate is quite dense, ample and layered with a creamy texture, at first, yet medium-bodied and light in structure, lacking depth and intensity, despite a certain consistency and a fairly long finish, but definitely not showing the concentration nor the complexity of the great vintages. 

Despite showing a certain youth, it is fairly accessible and approachable already, and despite showing enough good acidity as the backbone, will it pass the test of time? Time will tell I guess...  To revisit with the next 6  months to a year, to see how it evolves... 

Thus, I will ask the question again, why make Dom Perignon in lesser vintage? 

Unless it is for internal financial, political and commercial reasons, which I'm sure it is, I don't really see the point, but that's just me (just saying...)... no wonder why the image of Dom Perignon has diminished compared to what it used to be 25 years ago.  

During the 2000s, Dom Perignon produced the following vintages: 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009, (and 2010), while everyone knows in the wine industry that 2000 and more especially 2002 and 2008 were the best vintages, and 2004 and 2009 were very decent, while 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2010 are regarded as being comparatively lacklustre, and therefore could have been avoided.  

In my opinion, that was not a very good strategic move, and somehow, in most Sommeliers' eyes, that's how you kill both your brand and your image.   



Let's move on to the next wine.  






Perrot-Minot Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru 2017


As stated above, for most Burgundy wines, the 2017 vintage was, overall, "ok-to-good", "very good" for some, but, not a "great" vintage. Mostly for the reds, which somewhat lacked concentration compared to previous vintages. That said, still, a wealth of good-quality wines were made. More especially by the producers who approached this vintage with a conscientious mind, a prepared attitude and careful attention to detail. 

Perrot-Minot was definitely one of those. Yet, easy for me to say that, as I love Perrot-Minot! Good years and bad years, I have yet to taste a bad wine from Perrot-Minot. 

Christophe Perrot-Minot took over his father back in 1993, then acquired Domaine Pernin Rossin in 2000, thus expanding the Domaine which now comprises 13 hectares, extending from Nuits-St-Georges to Gevrey-Chambertin. 

Run by Christophe Perrot-Minot and his wife, Marit Lindal Perrot-Minot, they produce a wide array of wines from various appellations at all levels: village, Premiers Crus and Grands Crus. The bottles labelled "Domaine Perrot-Minot" are all crafted at the Domaine, while the other ones, simply labelled as "Perrot-Minot", come from a careful selection of plots they oversee, harvest, and/or buy grapes from, but do not own. Which is the case for this particular bottle of Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru 2017.  

Despite meticulous and attentive winemaking or organic-oriented vineyard management methods, the wines benefit from the quality of the various terroirs (soils, subsoils, sun exposure, micro-climates, etc...), as well as low yield and a good amount of old vines between 40-55 years of age, the oldest being more than 75 years old, labelled as "Cuvée Ultra".     

The wines are usually aged for 12 to 14 months in Tronçais and Allier oak, from Tonnellerie Rémond: 
  • around 25% new oak for village-level wines, 
  • 40% for Premiers Crus 
  • 50% for Grands Crus 
The excellent balance, healthiness, harmony and complexity of these wines come from the combination of... 



light oak ageing treatment comes to complete the quality achieved in the vineyard, the careful sorting at the vineyard and at the cellar Wines are bottled without fining or filtration.

A few days ago, I had the opportunity to do a brief inspection of a few bottles that were bought by the wine team of one of our outlets, which included some old and rare gems, like this Mouton 1961. 






Always a pleasure to scrutinize these ladies everywhere and even gently lift up their capsule to look at what's underneath, whenever possible. 😀 😄 (we're still talking about a bottle of wine, right? 😉)






This particular bottle showed a great level, good colour and sedimentation. Despite a few nicks, scratches and tears, the capsule and label were in good condition and show no counterfeiting signs, even under the microscope and the blue light. 







That's a "Passed" for me! How about you?  What do you think?

LeDomduVin: Château d'Yquem 1900 close-up

Although I left my position as Wine Quality Control Director, nearly a year ago, after doing it for 9 years in my previous job, I still love doing wine inspections and checking out these old and rare ladies in every detail. 

A few days ago, I had the opportunity to do a brief inspection of a few bottles that were bought by the wine team of one of our outlets, which included some old and rare gems, like this Yquem 1900. 






It's not every day, that one gets to spend some time with a 122-year-old doyenne. Always a very humbling experience. 






Always a pleasure to scrutinize these ladies everywhere and even gently lift up their capsules to look at what's underneath. 😀 😄 (we're still talking about a bottle of wine, right? 😉)






This particular bottle showed great level and boasted a very hypnotic dark-blood-orange-gold colour. The capsule and label were in good condition and show no counterfeiting signs, even under the microscope and the blue light either. 






In my previous job, we had a "Yquem Gold Collection" boasting more than 150 vintages, from 1825 to recent years. 





Consequently, I'm very acquainted with this particular type of old bottle of Yquem, and most of them have been reconditioned at Château, back in the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s, and it is normally indicated somewhere. 






Yet, despite an impeccable label and cork, this particular bottle did not show any sign, either on the cork or on a separate label, that it has been recorked or reconditioned in the last 40 years... strange, I definitely need to investigate further 🤔🤔🤔, I will ask the Château. 

Otherwise, that's a "Passed" for me! How about you? What do you think? Superb colour, isn't it?

Always a pleasure to scrutinize these ladies everywhere and even gently lift up their capsules to look at what's underneath. 😀 😄 (we're still talking about a bottle of wine, right? 😉)

This particular bottle showed a great level, good colour and sedimentation. The capsule and label were in good condition and show no counterfeiting signs, even under the microscope and the blue light. 

The capsule had been previously cut, so I couldn't resist opening it and having a closer look at the cork, which was also in very good condition. 








That's a "Passed" to me! How about you?

LeDomduVin: Au revoir Bernard...




Au revoir Bernard 




Bernard (de Laage de Meux) was a friend, an adviser, a leader and a mentor for me. I first met him in 2002, when he was working at Chateau Palmer, and I was working as a Maître-D / Sommelier for a catering business doing occasional dinners and events at the Chateau. 

Then, our paths crossed again while I was working in New York (2002-2011). And finally, here in Hong Kong, our paths mingled even more, as I ended up working with him, at Goldin Wines, for 7 years (2014-2021). And, our friendship continued to this day, even after my departure from Goldin Wines, (back in July 2021).  

Basically, I knew him for 20 years, during which, he was, in turn, a client, a host, a guide, a salesman, a Chateau representative, a consultant and even my direct boss, but, most of all, he was a great man and someone I really enjoyed spending time and talking with.      

And, understandably, I was devastated when I heard the news, early this morning (June 9th), about his passing on June 7th. 







He was kind, discreet, generous, approachable, personable, courteous, educated, polite, and well-mannered. A charming man in many ways. 

He was passionate, knowledgeable, opinionated, open, optimistic and pragmatic, and was always with a smile. 

And most of all, he was a globetrotter and a people person, always sharing his passion, knowledge and experiences with others, always with a touch of humour. 







He loved life, wine, food and people. 

He also loved travelling and being part of the actions. He was reactive and proactive in everything, leading the way and always keeping himself busy with many things and projects simultaneously. 

He was a good man, dependable, authentic and charismatic. He will truly be missed, as he was really appreciated everywhere he went by most people he met. He was known at the 4 corners of the world. 

All my thoughts and condolences go to his family, friends and colleagues, loved ones, and everyone else who crossed his path while travelling, at a restaurant, during a tasting or a wine event, or even at work. 

May you rest in peace now, Bernard. Peace to your soul. You will be missed. 

Thank you for taking me under your wings all these years, and thank you for being a friend and a mentor.

Il regardait toujours vers l'avenir,
mais tout vient de s'arrêter.
Un père, un frère, un époux,

et toujours dans l'action. 
Il aimait la vie, le vin et les gens, 
le bien manger et le bien boire, 
les rencontres et les voyages. 
Des décennies à vadrouiller,

il connaissait du monde et

C'est un grand monsieur qui nous a quitté...

Mes anciens collègues et moi-même partageons la peine de son épouse et de ses enfants, ainsi que le reste de la famille et les proches, en ce moment de deuil.

Nos pensées vous accompagneront ce Vendredi 10 et Samedi 11 Juin 2022. Il nous manque déjà.

Je continuerai de penser à lui et de parler de lui, car, le souvenir d'une personne disparue ne disparait vraiment que si l'on cesse de penser et de parler d'elle comme si elle était encore là.

Bernard vous resterez a jamais dans mon esprit et dans mon cœur. Reposez en paix et paix à votre âme.

Pour clôturer ce post en votre hommage, Bernard, je vais utiliser ces petites expressions qui vous tenaient à cœur, que vous aimiez dire, et que je vous ai entendu dire si souvent face à un problème ou une situation compliquée, et qui serviront sûrement à toutes celles et ceux qui sont dans la peine et vont avoir du mal à faire le deuil de votre départ si soudain et si inattendu, dans les prochaines semaines, mois, et années qui vont suivre:

The Unusual Suspect...

Chateau Brane-Cantenac 2001



Intriguing post title, isn't it? Well, let me explain. 

Yesterday, I've opened 2 bottles of Château Brane-Cantenac 2001, for a private lunch. 





The weather was hot, heavy, and humid. And, because a Bordeaux red was requested for that lunch, (instead of a fresh and cold white or rosé, or even a light Burgundy red, surely more appropriate for lunch on such a hot day), I checked what I had in stock, and decided to go for something rather unusual, light and feminine, which led me to a "Margaux", in a lesser and "non-solar" vintage: 2001, which ended up being both satisfying and very surprising... 







At first, I was a bit reluctant to choose this wine, as Brane-Cantenac is an unassuming wine and a rather low-key estate, far from the "flamboyance" and "prestige" of some of its peers, (from the same rank or lower). We all know that this has nothing to do with the quality of its wine, yet, one must admit that Brane-Cantenac is not the first Chateau name that comes to mind when deciding to open a bottle of wine from Margaux (no offence to its owner Henri Lurton, who has been doing a good job since he took over his father Lucien Lurton, back in 1992). 

Moreover, despite major efforts and investments within the last 10-15 years, and despite its classification as "2nd growth" in the 1855 Classification, Brane-Cantenac is considered by some as an "underachiever" that has always kept a low profile and a reputation for producing clean and consistent, yet, rather light, if not thin, fresh, crisp, and agreeable wines, even if slightly dry, tannic, stern and even austere, "Classic Bordeaux Style" as the Bordelais like to say, more especially in lesser vintage.  







So, I can already hear you say that if I was reluctant to choose and serve this wine, why serve it? I could have chosen another one from the client's stock or bought something different from one of the selected local HK wine shops I buy from, occasionally, for this type of private lunch. Granted. However, due to time constraints, budget restrictions and a few other factors, I had to choose from another stock, where options were limited. 

And that said, although local HK suppliers and wine retailers have interesting portfolios, including vast arrays of wines from around the world to choose from, they don't always necessarily have the right Chateau/Domaine/Producer/Cru and/or vintage that I'm looking for and/or that will trigger my interest, and/or do not have enough bottles of it. 

Like everywhere else in the world, the best wines and best vintages often go quite quickly, bought mainly by the restaurants and private buyers (and even competitors who resell them later on). Consequently, it is not surprising to find a majority of the supplier's portfolios with mostly off or lesser vintages left to choose from, especially in the range of HKD 2,000 and less (around 240 Euros  /  255 USD)       



As the weather was hot, heavy, and humid, I was looking for something rather light and easy to pair with the menu's wide array of Western and Asian food dishes. Amongst the list I had to choose from, not only this Brane-Cantenac 2001 was the most suitable for the situation, (amongst the Bordeaux available at my immediate disposal), but it was also one of the few within the requested price range I could buy from. 

Basically, I did not have much of a choice in the given circumstances (a lesson learned the hard way, as we say, I will make sure it does not happen again). 

However, I was thinking that it would probably be ok. As, despite the fact that 2001 was a terrible vintage for Bordeaux in general, that produced hard, dry, green, even slightly under-ripe, tannic, and astringent wines, which were very tight and closed in their youth (for most Bordeaux regions), surprisingly enough, lots of these same Bordeaux 2001 have evolved really well and are drinking very pleasantly now. 

A rather "surprising" vintage I must say, which, in its youth, did not give any signs or indications that it will turn that way two decades later (in my opinion).         

With time, the hard tannins have mellowed down and become more integrated. Some of the rough edges have rounded down too, and the overall profile of most Bordeaux wines, from this specific vintage, seems also more balanced and harmonious than it was 5-10 years ago. 






Bordeaux will never cease to surprise me, as TIME is, more often than none, its saviour, as even lesser or bad vintages may end up being good if you have the patience to wait for them and let time do its magic. It does not necessarily work for most wines in the rest of the world, but, it seems that most of the Top Bordeaux wines have been blessed by the God of wine ("Dionysus", also spelt "Dionysos", also called "Bacchus" or (in Rome) "Liber Pater"), which conferred them with the ability to get "better" (*) with time, even if they were not that great to start with.         

(*) Not necessarily true for some of them, which were mediocre or bad, to begin with, and did not get better but worst with time. Yet, overall, it always seems that even in bad years, like a cat, Bordeaux always falls back on its feet and gets the best of it against all odds.   


I will stop here, as, once again, as I love sharing my views and opinions, I have deviated from the main original subject of this post, let's go back to the wine, shall we?  
 






I took the wine out of the wine fridge about 1 hour before decantation, to let it rest standing up and thus allow for the sediments to fall at the bottom of the bottle. Then I decanted the wine roughly about 1 hour and a half before serving, as I knew it will surely be tight and will need time to breathe. 

I did it even though a part of me was hesitating as lesser Bordeaux vintages may not always need decantation. However, I knew already, having opened Brane-Cantenac 2001, quite a few times in recent months and years, that it will need some aeration and needed decantation, at least to separate it from the sediments, quite present in this particular vintage (as you see on the picture above).

At the opening, as expected, the wine was tight and closed, yet, to a certain extent, fresh, and crisp, with timid aromas of unripe red cherries mingling with some earthy and animal notes, as well as hints of green leaf and minerals. I decanted it slowly to expose it to the maximum of air while filling the decanter, and prevent heavily present sediments to fall into it. 

Then I tasted the wine. As expected for a 2001 vintage, it was rather thin and austere, lacking a bit of depth and complexity, showing slightly present (yet fairly integrated) tannins, what people in Bordeaux usually refer to as "an elegant Margaux in a classic Bordeaux style". That said, it was not unpleasant at all, showing off, in a better way, flavours similar to the aromas of the nose, like red cherry, and raspberry, but also darker fruit like black current, combined with liquorice, earth, minerals and some oaky and vegetal notes. Fairly balanced overall with good acidity and a good dose of tannins, but not off-putting, rather light, lacking a bit of depth and texture despite having some structure. The finish was a bit short to my liking. Overall, it appeared to me as still pretty young and fresh, with slightly unripe red fruit tones and vegetal notes that just needed some time to round up with air.
